HISTORY:
In July 1999, we were approved as a Community
Housing Development Organization. In February 2003, they were
certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Community Development
and by the Tennessee Housing Development Agency as a comprehensive
counseling center. A particular emphasis of The Works –
as its charter states – is “the development, ownership,
and operation of housing for low and moderate income families
and persons, and elderly and/or handicapped low and moderate
income families and persons, under private and/or governmental
housing programs.” To that end, The Works has developed
32 single-family homes for affordable homeownership, 11 of which
were rehabilitated homes. In May of 2002 The Works also opened
Alpha Renaissance Apartments. This 80-unit development was constructed
using Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, and services the rental
housing needs of households at 60% or below of the Memphis Median
Area Income as defined by HUD.
